Bourbons. Ryes. Oh my!

Bourbons. Ryes. Oh my!

When I’m hosting a tasting, there’s usually always someone in the group who says they can’t tell the difference between whiskeys.  Even if you’ve never tried whiskey, given a few pointers you could certainly tell the difference between a smokey single-malt and a corn whiskey.  But even for some of us who have more experience, sometimes during a blind taste it can be hard to tell the difference between a bourbon and a rye whiskey.  Take Basil Hayden’s Bourbon for example. It is so smooth with a wonderful balance between sweet and spicy.  It was during a blind taste where I first tried Basil Hayden Bourbon.  It was a toss-up between bourbon and rye and I got it wrong. It’s ok because I must admit, since then I have enjoyed practice taste testing between the two! It turns out Basil Hayden, while a Bourbon, has a good amount of rye in the mash bill. I love the pepper and hint of peppermint notes it has. If you tend to steer clear of bourbon, I encourage you to try Basil Hayden.  You just may find you like bourbon after all and perhaps even a new favorite to add to your collection.
